Organic unrefined flaxseed oil is a near golden yellow in color and cold pressed from the nutrient powerhouse, flaxseeds. Flaxseed oil is extremely rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly alpha linoleic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid. It also has a moderate proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid. As far as skin is concerned, topical application of flaxseed oil has been shown to significantly decrease trans-epidermal water loss, skin roughness and scaling, and skin sensitivity after exposure to irritants like nicotine, while increasing smoothness, hydration, and elasticity. The benefits of flaxseed oil for hair are equally glowing. Topical application of flaxseed oil on scalp and hair after four weeks has been shown to improve the width or diameter of hair strands, which contributes to fuller and thicker-looking hair. Importantly also, the ALA content of flaxseed oil has been found to inhibit the 5 alpha reductase type 2 enzyme which promotes the proliferation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that shrinks hair follicles, changes the cyclic phase of the hair growth cycle, and contributes to hair thinning and loss.
