Organic unrefined rosehip seed oil is a “dry” or fast-absorbing oil with a beautiful reddish orange hue. Studies on the composition of rosehip seed oil suggest that it is rich in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), carotenoids (including beta-carotene/Vitamin A and lycopene), vitamin E, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), essential fatty acids (EFAs, such as linoleic and linolenic acids), and phytosterols. The vitamin C in rosehip seed oil gently sloughs away dead skin cells to promote a brighter, more youthful, and even-toned skin; it also encourages the production of collagen which works to lift and tighten the skin. The vitamin A content of rosehip seed oil works to diminish signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging; also, it works in concert with vitamin E to provide photoprotection and photoaging prevention by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced damage. Finally, rosehip seed oil’s high concentration of PUFAs, EFAs, and vitamin E help to protect against inflammation and thus alleviate inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and neurodermatitis; they also combine with water molecules in the skin to act as a water barrier and to reduce trans-epidermal water loss which is a necessary function to keep the skin well-hydrated and supple.
